One of my most beloved yoga teachers is Erich Schiffmann. He taught the first teacher training I took in 1994 in Santa Monica, CA at Yoga Works. I apprenticed with him in 1994 and 1995, and then continued studying with him for another decade (until I moved to NYC and could only study with him on occasional visits or at a retreat).
Sometimes I would go to his home studio and practice with him. He’d be playing Leonard Cohen or Neil Young and we’d hang out on our mats and do our own practice. Sometimes I’d ask questions or try things he was doing…sometimes I would follow my own inner guidance—that’s what Erich taught me.
He teaches how to Move into Stillness. He teaches how to Listen Inwardly. He teaches how to tune in to Big Mind and get clarity.
It is in this tradition of hanging out and doing yoga together that I am starting to open my own home studio up four days a week on Zoom, and you are welcome.
You can come, there’s no cost, and do your own practice with me and whoever else shows up that day. Sometimes I play music, but if you’re not into it, you can turn the volume off. Sometimes I do standing poses, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I do sun salutations, often I don't. Sometimes I take a long savasana, sometimes I meditate instead.
This is experimental and hopefully inspiring. It’s been a year and a half now that we have been mostly at home doing yoga in boxes on screens. Some of you may feel like doing your own thing but find it difficult to set aside the time. I am hoping you can make time and join me.
You lie down, you check in with your breath and wait for your own intuitive sense of what to do next. And then, as Erich would say, “Be brave enough to do what you are moved to do.”
You do not have to be an advanced yogi. You do not have to do anything impressive. You simply get to do what you feel is needed.
These sessions are free. Register ahead, drop in when you like. Leave when you feel done, or take a long savasana and stay in it after I ring the bell. No instruction. There is room for questions and talking if you're moved to ask or talk.
These days, we're doing Freedom Yoga on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 Mountain Time.
